Burr(US burl) is wood that has been deformed. Normally below the ground and often only discovered after the tree dies. This deformation occurs naturally to a small amount of trees. Rather than burn he wood as a fuel local forest dwllers has developed a skill in carving and polishing the burr wood by hand. It is difficult and time consuming work - a skill passed down through generations.
The result can be something beautiful and unique with no two pieces being the same.
It is treated to minimise cracking but you will still find small cracks that are part of its endearing charm.
As a result of the treatment the wood will quickly darken if left in direct sunlight.
Clean with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Keep away from direct heat. It is polished with food safe oils.
You can buy it with confidence knowing that you are supporting developing cultures and not contributing to any deforestation since these trees are replaced every time they are falled.
